Lucian (Lucci) Medrea
Coach, Girls’
Coach Lucian Medrea brings a wealth of volleyball experience and
an international perspective to Energy VBC.
Before moving to the Chicago area, he was Head Coach of the
Girls’ Junior Varsity Team at Paul Wharton High School in New
Tampa, Florida. He also was Assistant Coach of the Girls’
Varsity Team at Paul Wharton High School. Previously, he taught
volleyball classes for different levels and age groups at Summer
Camp USA.
Coach Medrea also taught Physical Education and was Head
Coach of the Girls’ Volleyball Team at Zalau Sports High School
in Zalau, Romania from 1998–2002. Zalau Sports High School is a
specialized school recruiting and developing sports talent from
all over the city and enlisting them in athletic programs,
starting as early as 5th grade and continuing all the way though
high school. Zalau Sports High School is an institution
dedicated to the growth and development of elite young athletes,
combining the sports training with a successful academic
program. Coach Medrea helped lead his Zalau volleyball team to
national championships two years in a row: the National High
School Champions with the Girls’ Junior Volleyball Team in 2001
and the National High School Champions with the Girls’ Senior
Volleyball Team in 2000.
Coach Medrea has a B.S. in Physical Education and Sports from
Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj, Romania and holds both Sports
Teaching and Volleyball Coach Certifications. He played on the
Cluj University Volleyball Team, a 1st Division intercollegiate
program. His team placed 3rd in the Intercollegiate National
Competition in 1995. Previously, he played on the Zalau Sports
High School Volleyball Team, along with other elite players
selected from a large talent pool. His team became the National
Highschool Clampion in 1993. He began playing volleyball in the
school’s Sports Club Volleyball Team starting in 5th grade.
