David Joyce
Coach David began his playing career at Maine West High School, where he
specialized in setting but played all positions. He received all-conference
and all-area honors twice, and also was varsity team captain and MVP. He
continued his playing career at the University of Illinois club team,
playing as an Outside Hitter on their C team as a freshman, and on their B team the following three years.
During his tenure at University of Illinois, a self-coached team, he
developed his coaching skills — identifing team weaknesses and planning
practices. In three years of competing at Nationals, his teams earned a first,
a second, and
a third place finish. Through this experience, Coach David has learned the
necessary characteristics a team that wants to travel deep into the national
tournament must possess.
Coach David has spent most of his coaching career at Maine West High
School, assisting with coaching the boys’ and girls’ summer camps
for players aged 12–18. He has coached at Maine West’s separate
Hitter/Setter Camp, Defense Camp, and Team Camp for three years. With his wide variety
of playing and coaching experience at several different positions, he is
well-equipped to
improve his Energy VBC players at all positions.
